Following the announcement today in the Queen's birthday honours list that Stelios is to receive a knighthood the serial entrepreneur had the following statement:
"At the risk of stating the obvious this is a great honour for me," said Stelios. "It came as a surprise to me and I am not sure at this stage that I deserve an honour for services to entrepreneurship which is usually reserved for those with a lifetime of business achievement. I only started easyJet some 11 years ago!"
He continued, "On reflection, I am always pleasantly surprised when ordinary members of the public stop me in the street to say 'thank you', I guess for making travel and other goods and services affordable to them! To get the same endorsement now from the top echelons of British society is a joy to me and a great reward for the efforts that I have made. I humbly accept this honour and dedicate it to the more than 10 thousand men and women who work for the businesses that I have created. It is they who, with their efforts, make a difference in the lives of millions and millions of consumers all over the world on a daily basis. I also would like to accept this honour in the spirit of entrepreneurship. I have always said that in order to make an economy more entrepreneurial we need to learn to celebrate business success and tolerate business failure." |
